Poker measure draws opposition

"We think there is a considerable element of chance in poker"

AUSTIN -- State Rep. Jose Menendez thinks he has a pretty good hand, but Rob Kohler of the Christian Life Coalition wishes the San Antonio Democrat would fold his cards.

Menendez is pushing a bill that would allow Texas hold 'em games at licensed bars and restaurants with the state taking a cut to help pay for affordable housing.

'It's a game of skill that a lot of people enjoy playing, and my bill would make sure it's regulated by the state,' said Menendez, whose measure, House Bill 3186, will be considered by the House Licensing and Administrative Procedures Committee today. 'I'm hoping the committee will look at it favorably and send it along to the full House.' Read more
